Type 1 hearth pads provide ember protection only — they shield your floor from sparks and hot embers that may pop out of the stove, but do not block heat from radiating through to the subfloor. Type 2 hearth pads provide both ember protection AND thermal insulation, reducing heat transfer to combustible flooring underneath.
