Do I need 18 inches of clearance for all of it?
Yes, the whole run. If any part of the path cannot hold 18 inches to a combustible, use double wall DVL instead, which drops the requirement to 6 inches.
Which way does the crimped end face?
Crimped end down, toward the stove. That keeps any condensed creosote inside the pipe instead of running out a seam onto the stove top.
How many screws per joint?
Three sheet metal screws evenly spaced at each joint is the standard practice, and most stove manuals call for it explicitly.
How far does this need to be from the wall?
18" to any combustible surface. If you cannot hold 18", use double wall DVL instead, which drops the requirement to 6". Never reduce clearance with a homemade heat shield unless your stove manual permits it.
Is single wall good enough, or should I pay for double wall?
