Freestanding + New Install
Stove goes against a wall or in a corner. Requires running new Class A chimney up through the ceiling and roof.
Freestanding + Existing Chimney
Stove connects to an existing masonry or factory-built chimney. Chimney must be inspected and lined if needed.
Insert Into Fireplace
Insert slides into existing fireplace opening and connects via flexible liner running up the existing chimney flue.
Pellet Stove
Uses smaller 3" or 4" pellet vent pipe β completely different from wood stove venting. Horizontal wall exit is most common.
Single Wall Black Pipe

Double Wall (DVL)
Insulated interior stove pipe. Only 6" clearance to combustibles. Better draft, keeps heat in the pipe where it belongs.
Class A (DuraPlus)
Triple-wall chimney pipe for exterior use and passing through ceilings/walls. Required for all roof penetrations and attic runs.
Flex Liner
Stainless steel corrugated liner for existing masonry chimneys. 316TI grade for wood; different grades for gas and oil.
2-10-3 Rule
Chimney must extend at least 2 ft above anything within 10 ft horizontally, and at least 3 ft above the roof penetration point.
Clearances
Single wall: 18" to combustibles. Double wall: 6". Class A: 2" (check manufacturer specs). Never reduce below minimums.
Permits
Most jurisdictions require a permit for new wood stove installations. Budget $50β$300. Inspector will verify clearances and liner.
Liner Requirement
Most fire codes require an existing masonry chimney to be lined before connecting a new appliance. Unlined flues pose a serious risk.

Three components that seal and terminate the chimney at the roof:
- Flashing: Waterproof roof penetration. Order low-pitch (0/12β6/12) or steep-pitch (7/12β12/12) to match your roof
- Storm collar: Seals around the pipe above the flashing to prevent water entry
- Chimney cap: Prevents rain, animals, and debris from entering the flue. Required by most codes
No. The correct pipe type depends entirely on where it runs. Single-wall and double-wall stove pipe is only for the interior of the living space. Class A (triple-wall) chimney pipe is required anywhere the pipe passes through a ceiling, wall, attic, or exits the building.

In most jurisdictions, yes. New installations require a mechanical or building permit and a final inspection by a certified inspector. Even replacing an existing stove may require a permit if you're modifying the venting system.
Permits typically cost $50β$300 and inspectors verify clearances, liner sizing, and roof termination height. Work without a permit can void homeowner's insurance and cause problems at resale.
Have your chimney inspected by a CSIA-certified sweep before connecting any appliance. Signs an unlined chimney needs lining:
- The existing liner is cracked, missing mortar, or has spalling bricks
- The flue size doesn't match your stove's collar (oversized flues lose draft)
- You're connecting a new, higher-efficiency appliance to an old chimney
- The chimney was previously used for oil or gas and you're switching to wood
Always match the liner diameter to your stove's flue collar size. Most residential wood stoves use a 6" collar. Never downsize the liner from the collar diameter β this restricts draft and can cause dangerous backdrafting.
For longer or more tortuous flue paths, sizing up one diameter can help maintain draft. Check your stove's installation manual for the manufacturer's minimum liner sizing requirements.

Standard kits fit 8 ft and 9 ft ceilings well. 10 ft ceilings typically need 1 extra section; 12 ft ceilings need 2β3 extra sections.
Insert kits are designed for fireplace inserts and include hardware to connect at the top of the firebox. Appliance kits (also called "tee kits") work for freestanding stoves connecting at the base of a chimney and include a tee fitting for cleanout access.
Never use an insert kit where a tee kit is required β the connection hardware is different and the tee cleanout access is required by most codes for freestanding stove installations into existing chimneys.
Yes, but the venting path is longer and more complex. You have two options:
- Ceiling exit through two floors: Use extra pipe sections to reach the ceiling (our finder calculates these). You'll need a 35 ft liner for two-story chimneys.
- Wall exit to exterior Class A: Run stove pipe horizontally through the wall, then run Class A chimney vertically up the exterior of the house. Generally simpler and more economical.
For an experienced DIYer:
- Insert with existing chimney: 2β4 hours (liner drop + connection)
- Freestanding into existing chimney: 4β6 hours
- New freestanding installation (ceiling exit): 6β10 hours including roof penetration
- Wall exit to exterior Class A: 5β8 hours
